Cockroaches at home: how to identify and control them

Cockroaches hide well, reproduce quickly and require a systematic approach.

How to recognise a cockroach problem

Cockroaches are mostly active at night. The problem may already be extensive before the insects are seen during the day.

  • Live insects at night
  • Small dark droppings in drawers and along walls
  • Egg cases or shed skins
  • A stale smell in heavily infested areas

What you can do yourself

Remove food and water sources, clean hidden areas and close gaps around pipes and skirting boards. Monitoring traps help assess the extent of the problem.

  • Store food in closed containers
  • Empty rubbish bins regularly
  • Use bait gel and monitoring traps according to the label
  • Check the traps after one to two weeks

When to call a specialist

Professional treatment is recommended when cockroaches are visible during the day, return after self-treatment or have spread between apartments. Businesses and food handling areas should act immediately.
