Do it yourself ant control

Make your own ant control at home and at work

What should you know about ants?

Ants are social insects that live in colonies. The control plan should include the destruction of the entire colony. Simply “shooting” an ant with an ant spray will at best only kill a few ants.

Ants may enter your house to find food or shelter. Knowing the habits of ants makes it much easier for you to get them under control, and if you do everything right, there is no need for ant control. For this purpose, we give an overview of the activities that need to be carried out in order to get rid of ants permanently (unfortunately, there is no such thing as permanent, it is more like a season – about half a year).

Ants enter through even the smallest cracks in search of food and drink. They are either looking for sweet foods or protein/fat rich foods. Once they have found their food source, ants usually leave behind pheromones for other ants to come after.

Inspection:

In order to find a solution to your ant problem, the first step is an inspection.

To find ant nests, you have to follow their tracks. Ants leave chemical pheromone trails as they forage, so that other ants can follow them to find food and drink.

Inside the house, observe the edges of the carpets, doors, windows and all places in the kitchen. The easiest way to find the path to the nest is to observe where the ants go after finding food.

Outside the house, observe the edge of the foundation, places where there is dirt and debris. Any decaying place may contain an ant nest or an ant trail. Also check the bases of objects in the garden (flower pots, for example) that are on the ground. Some anthills can be well hidden.

  1. Go along the path to find the nest.
  2. Use the repellent directly on the nest if possible. Or use bait or a non-repellent insecticide along the perimeter of the house and on the ant trail.

Tips and tricks for controlling ants

There are two main types of ant problems:
  1. Ants that live outdoors but nest indoors.
  2. Ants that have already built nests indoors.

Your Ant Control strategy must depend on what species of ant you are dealing with and what type of problem you are dealing with. Ant identification is important and can be difficult without a magnifying glass. A magnifying glass can also be helpful in finding Ant tracks and nests.

Ants that live outdoors but nest indoors

Ants that live outside will migrate into your home to find food. Some species live and breed indoors. Follow these points to avoid both options:

  1. Seal and insulate gaps and cracks to prevent ants from migrating indoors. Since Ants are very resourceful in finding new entry points, this task can prove difficult.
  2. Clean the entry points with an effective cleaning agent to erase the pheromone traces of the Ants. Then use some non-repellent based insecticide along the perimeter and entry points.
Ants that live and nest in your home

There are some ants that not only visit homes after eating, but also create colonies inside the house. Click Indoor Ant Control to find more information. Indoor colonies can be present year-round, especially in warmer climates. Domestic ant species in Estonia are only pharaoh ants , but there are many more in other parts of the world. But they all want food products. Ant baits are very effective ways to kill ants. They are safe for both humans and domestic animals (of course, you MUST observe safety regulations !). Ant poisons come in gels, granules, or bait “houses.” The active particles in baits can be sugar-based or protein/fat-based to attract ant species and target their nutritional needs.
